Episode 14

“Symbolism and Interpretation of the Holy Liturgy”
With Fr. Bogdan Bucur, an associate professor of Patristics at St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary in New York

  • Definition of symbol
    • weak definition: a convention for what something means that people agree upon
    • full definition: a reality that discloses another reality
    • our Liturgy gives us access to the Heavenly Liturgy of the Angels
  • Praying at the Liturgy
    • need to stop praying to “our personal Jesus” and enter into the communal prayer
      • we are not called to cultivate personal piety
      • need to empty ourselves of personal thoughts, prayers, and repentance
    • important to know clearly what is being sung, which the chanting helps with
    • need to be present because we are truly meeting Christ our God
    • the Liturgy teaches us to “commend ourselves, one another, and our whole lives to Christ our God”
  • Icons
    • God humbles Himself to express Himself to us through a physical medium
    • transfigured matter that acts as a mirror
      • shows us who God desires for us to become
      • God wants everyone to attain salvation, perfection, deification
  • Isaiah 6
    • Ark of the Covenant
      • with his natural senses, the prophet sees the Ark of the Covenant, but with his spiritual perception, he sees the heavenly throne of the Lord
      • iconography shows Christ as the Lord on the throne, thereby prefiguring His Incarnation
    • Statues of cherubs
      • he sees statues of cherubs, but spiritually he hears the angels singing “Holy, Holy, Holy”
    • Hot coal
      • when the angel puts a hot coal on the prophet’s tongue, this is a full symbol for the priest giving the faithful Holy Communion
      • in Matins for the Presentation of the Lord, Elder Symeon says to the Mother of God, “you, with your hands as tongs, make me resplendent as you give me the one you carry”
